Active Storage Extends Performance and Usability Lead

In a recent release by Active Storage the company proclaimed significant performance and ease of use enhancements in the Active Storage XRAID, a RAID storage system for Apple users. Debuted in October 2008, the Active Storage XRAID features a Mac OS X management suite and claims outstanding performance in Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, and Xsan applications. Housed in a 3U enclosure, the Active Storage XRAID is designed to produce high throughput and low latency in multi-user Apple applications with its architecture, LINUX based RAID kernel and segmented caching scheme. Existing customers can upgrade with a memory change and software update.

Concurrent Announces New MediaHawk Software Release

The release is SCTE-130 compliant and features enhancements such as play list support enabling advanced advertising. Wikipedia Reaches Fundraising Target

Online encyclopedia Wikipedia announced that it had attained its fundraising goal of six million dollars, enough to cover operating expenses for the current fiscal year. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said more than 125,000 people had donated a total of four million dollars since he made an appeal for funds on July 1. "In addition, we've received major gifts and foundation support totaling two million dollars," Wales said in a thank you letter on the website of his non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. "This combined revenue will cover our operating expenses for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, 2009."

AMD Releases Open-Source R600/700 3D Code for Linux

AMD has released code on the ATI R600 series concerning 3D acceleration so that the open-source Linux drivers can begin to support the newer ATI graphics processors. This Linux code is needed to begin fostering the development of an open-source R600 3D driver. The microcode for the newest GPUs has also been released. Novell, AMD, and Red Hat developers have been doing a majority of the work taking advantage of the documentation, while internally at AMD they have been working to prepare the R600 documentation for release. Additionally, work has been performed to decide what code or documentation is needed for programming, sanitize it of any information not relevant to bringing up the 3D engine, remove any details concerning future ATI hardware, and then getting all of this work cleared by AMD's lead software and hardware architects so that it can be publicly released without any NDAs or other strings attached.

Omni and Userful have announced that over 50 academic institutions from 29 US States and 10 countries worldwide have signed up to deploy Multi-station SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktops through the "Free the Penguins" education initiative. Originally launched in September, "Free the Penguins" provides customers with a low-cost, high-performance alternative to stand-alone Windows desktops and thin clients for computer labs, classrooms and libraries.
