Novell Billet Stymied: CEO Messman Postpones Gupta Appointment
Senior VP David Litwack Threatens to Walk

Digg This!

Novell CEO Jack Messman's plans to bring in former PeopleSoft exec Ram Gupta to replace recently departed vice-chairman Chris Stone has reportedly met with rebellion in the ranks.

Sources say senior VP David Litwack, who runs Novell's Identity Services unit, one of the two people Messman imagined would report to Gupta, threatened to walk. The Novell sales force, apparently out of sympathy for the shoddy way they perceive Stone was treated, also reportedly pushed back at a meeting in Dallas over the weekend. Messman reportedly wound up telling them Gupta's appointment wouldn't happen this week.

Whether that means a mere delay remains to be seen.

They didn't save Netware from obsolesence, nor stop the revenue from it's quarterly downfall, so the market and the IT industry is not exactly beating down Novell's door demanding product. And folks have been able to file and print on Unix/Linux forever. Selling those services to the Linux crowd is not going to be any easier than it was to sell them to abandoning Netware for Windows. Good technology that should be opened to Linux, but not essential. Novell talks the open-source talk, but the in-house developed stuff is still being held pretty close to the vest. Can't contaminate Linux with it unless it get released to the community, and the stack is vertical enough to keep them separated for now.

They have everything they need except an aggressive CEO and marketeting staff (the marketing staff has improved over the last few years but can still get more aggressive). They have money in the bank. Look at the press for the past year. I read many many IT columns and this is what I see: MS - Negative, Negative, Negative, Negative Open Source - Positive, Postive, Positive This is going to change the opinions of people worldwide. I'm not saying that OES is going to save NetWare. I just think that these award winning services being ported to Linux is a good thing. It gives companies alternatives to MS stuff. Novell will see earnings again. The momentum of the Linux r...

Jaguar wrote: Good Move Mr. Litwack. If the Novell BOD had any balls they would have kicked the MESS-MAN long time ago and appointed Chris Stone as CEO. Messman is ruining the spirit of Novell. The stock is at 6 instead of 20 due to the MESSMAN non-event. This CEO is a fake, absolutely useless. He has been on the Novell BOD since 1986 ( I believe) . When Novell took over Cambridge TP, Messman was asked why Cambridge didn't use any Novell products he replied: "I didn't know they have such great products ( after 15 years on the Novell board). Gimme a break. This man has to go !
